I bought these on sale not expecting much. They reproduce piano well for what they are, and fill my room with great sound. Was I surprised. They have nice presence, full sound. In this price range ($99 or so) they are excellent value. I returned a Bose set after listening to these.
Logitech makes some big claims with their Z-5 speakers, and I'd have to say they're largely true. All in all, I'd say these speakers will satisfy the majority of people out there. This is either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on personal taste.
But these speakers are not for everyone. Its lack of a headphone jack is unforgiveable, since it disables your sound card. These speakers really do carry throughout the room, and the audio separation is better than average.
The Z-5s do have major caveats, however. Comparing them with studio monitors, the Z-5s are very warm. They remind me most of the iPod Hi-Fi, but with much less bass.
It's also surprising that there are no volume or bass controls, especially given the price. For the rest, I'd suggest a full 2.1 setup like the Logitech Z-2300.
These guys do what I wanted. They sound good and they don't require a separate power source. They are powered through the USB connector. They come with an input jack so you can connect an MP3 player if you wish.
I bought these because my regular audio jack on my Dell 9300 is kind of funky- and because these don't need a power cord - I am very happy with them. They look nice and sound great -SimonDryCast.com
They also look great on my desk. I have a MacBook Pro that I like to use as a desktop at my desk, so I use a USB hub as a "docking station" to which I connect my backup drive, external keyboard/mouse, iPod dock, etc. That being the case, I was looking specifically for USB speakers - I didn't want to have to connect a separate stereo cable. They have a very decent volume range. I think you'd have to be somewhat of an audiophile or require a subwoofer to find fault with these speakers. These seemed to offer a good combination of quality, design, and price, and the reviews were good, so I went for it.
(Maybe this is pushing it, but their look, if not their shape, reminds me a bit of the triangular Bang & Olufsen speakers). Then when I want to use my laptop at my desk, I only have to connect the hub and all my peripherals are ready to go. If they didn't say Logitech, I would suspect they were a more upscale brand. I couldn't be happier. While I'm not an audio aficionado, I am a musician and music lover, and these speakers make my music library sound like new, bringing out lines and colors I never noticed or forgot after years of listening on cheap headphones. I haven't done much with the remote, but it seems to work with iTunes out of the box.
If you're a pretty typical computer user and music listener looking for above-average looks and performance at a below-average price, look no further.
